From Family Trip to Front-Row Seat in Gas Innovation
What started as a simple Florida family trip quickly turned into something much more.
Like many of us in the GAWDA community, it’s hard to pass through a region without wondering, “Who’s operating here – and what are they doing differently?” That curiosity led me to an impromptu visit to VS Carbonics in Opa Locka, Florida.
What I found was not just any fill plant; it was a business built on grit, growth, and a deep understanding of opportunities in this industry.
BUILT ON SERVICE, DRIVEN BY SAFETY
VS Carbonics’ story starts with its founder, Dios Vazquez, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran whose early career centered on marine safety. That foundation is still evident today.
From the moment you pull into the facility, you see it. CGA posters hanging in clear view while the team had the proper PPE to go with it.
Bulk tanks standing tall, branded trucks ready to roll and a team moving with purpose.
Inside, I was greeted by Fleet Manager Joel Besu, who was assisting a walk-in customer with a refill. This is not just a closed-door industrial site. It’s an open, service-driven hub where customers can walk in for CO₂, nitrogen, beer gas blends, or even dry ice on demand.
A FILL PLANT THAT FEELS DIFFERENT
As we moved through the facility, what stood out most was the open concept, creating efficiency and adaptability of the operation. You could be outside or inside filling just steps apart from each other. You can also see a filling station from the front desk, that way the desk person can stay productive if there are no walk-in customers at any given time.
Out back, horizontal CO₂ and nitrogen tanks anchor the site, feeding both indoor and outdoor filling stations, a setup that takes full advantage of the Florida climate. The open-air concept creates a seamless flow between overall production, storage, and customer interaction.
They’re actively filling a range of gases to support different industries, including CO2 for beverage systems, nitrogen for food processing, cryotherapy, and industrial use, as well as argon for welding. They also produce dry ice for immediate needs and specialized applications.
Outside, the next phase of their evolution is impossible to miss: microbulk delivery trucks, including a brand-new addition to the fleet, alongside flatbeds and box trucks staged for delivery.
Each asset tells the same story about steady, intentional growth.
FROM SPRINTER VANS TO MICROBULK STRATEGY
Like many great GAWDA distributors, VS Carbonics’ didn’t start big. They started with a van and a vision (literally).
In just over a decade, they have scaled into a multi-facility operation serving South and Central Florida, with an expanding footprint supported by their Tampa-based sister company, InCryo. Together, they have built an ecosystem that includes gas supply, equipment services, and asset management.
But what is most impressive is not just the growth; it is how they have evolved their model.
They have leaned heavily into microbulk solutions, replacing the logistical headache of cylinder-heavy operations with safer, more efficient systems. For customers, that means fewer deliveries, reduced labor, and increased safety.
For VS Carbonics, it means differentiation and a stronger long-term position in the market.
POWERING EXPERIENCES: WHERE GAS MEETS ATMOSPHERE
What really brings this story to life is who they serve.
Yes, VS Carbonics’ supports breweries, restaurants, and industrial applications – but they also play a behind-the-scenes role in something unique in Florida.
CREATING UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCES
Think high-end steakhouses using dry-ice for dramatic table-side presentations.
Think live cooking demonstrations that rely on liquid Nitrogen for visual impact.
Think concerts, festivals, and large-scale tourist events where special effects – fog, atmosphere, and visual enhancements are powered by CO2 and Nitrogen.
As Florida’s event and entertainment scene continues to grow, so does the demand for these applications and VS Carbonic’s has positioned itself right at the center of that trend.
They are not just delivering the gas; they are creating the experience and the atmosphere.
A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE OF DISTRIBUTION
Walking through VS Carbonics, one thing became clear:
This is not just a successful regional distributor.
It’s a preview of where parts of our industry are heading.
More microbulk, less cylinder dependency
More service integration, less transactional delivery
More application-driven demand
More emphasis on safety, efficiency, and customer accessibility
They’ve found ways to stay nimble while scaling, and that’s no small feat.
A big part of that is culture. Even in limited interactions, it’s clear that Dios and his team are aligned around shared goals and a deeper sense of purpose. That purpose fuels pride—and pride drives the intangibles that lead to growth.
While many GAWDA members rely on family-built teams, Dios has taken a different approach. Alongside some family involvement, he’s leaned into the brotherhood of his military background to fill key roles at VS Carbonics. It shows—not just in how the team operates, but in how much he genuinely cares for his people, especially those with whom he’s served.
VS Carbonics is a great representation of the entrepreneurial spirit that still exists among GAWDA independent distributors. Being first-generation they show that even in a world of consolidation there is always an opportunity to grow a business in this industry if you work for it.
