A partnership built on trust—and a shared commitment to putting safety information into the hands of those who need it most.
The industrial and medical gas industry depends on technical expertise at every level. But safety does not improve simply because trusted guidance exists. It improves when that guidance reaches the people filling cylinders, handling equipment, making deliveries, serving customers and overseeing day-to-day operations.
That principle has been at the heart of the partnership between the Gases and Welding Distributors Association and the Compressed Gas Association for the past 15 years.
In 2011, GAWDA and CGA established what is now known as the GAWDA Distributor Safety Program, sometimes called the CGA Subscription Program. The goal was straightforward: make authoritative safety information more readily available to the distributors whose employees interact with compressed gases, cylinders and related equipment every day.
Fifteen years later, that mission remains as important as ever.
BUILT ON A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY FOR SAFETY
GAWDA distributors occupy a critical position in the compressed gas supply chain. They do more than deliver products. Their employees fill and inspect cylinders, maintain equipment, advise customers, manage facilities and help ensure gases are handled safely from the point of distribution through their ultimate use.
CGA brings together technical experts from across the industry to develop the standards and guidance that support those activities. With more than a century of standards-development experience, CGA maintains hundreds of publications addressing compressed gas manufacturing, filling, storage, transportation, handling and use.
The partnership connects those two strengths: CGA’s technical knowledge and GAWDA distributors’ direct engagement with the people and businesses using compressed gases and equipment.
It is a relationship built on trust, but also on a shared understanding that safety information has its greatest value when people can find it, understand it and apply it.
PRACTICAL RESOURCES FOR DISTRIBUTOR OPERATIONS
Through the Distributor Safety Program, participating GAWDA Distributor Members receive free access to CGA’s electronic library of safety publications, e-learning modules, safety posters, the online Handbook of Compressed Gases and other educational resources. Participants also receive reduced pricing on hard-copy publications and access to selected CGA seminars and webinars.
These are not abstract technical resources. They address the work distributors perform every day.
Among the publications most frequently accessed by GAWDA participants are standards covering:
- Pressure testing of compressed gas cylinders and tubes;
- Visual inspection of steel, aluminum and fiber-reinforced cylinders;
- Classification and labeling of compressed gases;
- Preparation of cylinders and tubes for changes in gas service;
- Safe handling of compressed gases in containers;
- Filling of nonflammable compressed gas cylinders; and
- Cylinder valve outlet and inlet connections.
The program also provides access to concise, self-paced training on subjects such as cylinder handling and storage, acetylene safety, cryogenic liquids, oxygen safety, cylinder filling, compressed gas valves and specialty gases. Participating companies can use these materials to support employee onboarding, reinforce established procedures and help their teams stay current on safe industry practices.
TURNING INFORMATION INTO ACTION
Access is an essential first step, but the program is designed to encourage more than passive reference.
CGA safety posters can be printed and customized for participating companies, helping reinforce critical messages inside filling plants, warehouses, offices and customer-facing locations. The online Handbook of Compressed Gases provides easily searchable information on common gases, including their properties, uses, handling considerations and emergency-response information. Educational events allow distributor personnel to hear directly from technical experts and learn from incidents, emerging issues and industry experience.
Together, these resources help companies create a stronger connection between written standards and everyday behavior.
The program also allows participating distributors to submit safety data confidentially. CGA aggregates the information to help track broader industry safety trends, while company-identifying information is not shared without permission.
That data supports another important component of the partnership: the CGA and GAWDA Distributor Safety Awards. Presented in two categories based on employee exposure hours, the awards recognize companies demonstrating the greatest improvement in personnel safety over a five-year period.
The awards are not simply recognition for a strong record. They reinforce the idea that safety performance can be measured, improved and celebrated—and that companies of different sizes can learn from one another.
FIFTEEN YEARS—AND MORE WORK AHEAD
The longevity of the GAWDA–CGA partnership reflects the industry’s sustained commitment to safety. Nearly 100 GAWDA distributors already participate in the program, including independent companies of many sizes and geographic footprints.
But the opportunity is much larger.
Every eligible GAWDA distributor that has not yet enrolled is leaving valuable safety resources unused. The standards, training and tools available through the program can support employees across operations, safety, compliance, transportation, sales and management—and participation is available to GAWDA Distributor Members in good standing.
Signing up is simple. New participants complete the GAWDA Subscriber Application and a Safety Data Reporting Form based on the OSHA 300A form. Companies may submit either one or five years of safety data, although five years are required to qualify for the Distributor Safety Award. Companies with 10 or fewer employees may opt out of providing safety data.
After 15 years, the central premise of the program has not changed: the people handling compressed gases and equipment should have direct access to the industry’s most trusted safety information.
The standards already exist. The training is available. The resources are ready to be used.
